When will we be free from these chains called Covid? Days ahead of this year's Grammy Awards, Jungkook of BTS has tested positive for the virus, throwing one of the most anticipated performances of the upcoming broadcast into question. The singer had traveled to the United States this week to begin rehearsals for music's biggest night, but, according to an announcement made by HYBE (the South Korean entertainment company behind the megawatt band), Jungkook started experiencing symptoms upon arrival in Las Vegas. After an onsite PCR test confirmed he was positive, the singer began self-quarantining. According to HYBE, the case remains mild.

The slight silver lining is that Jungkook traveled to the United States alone, meaning that no one else from the seven-man group was exposed to the virus. (Still, bandmate J-Hope is still in South Korea, self-isolating after contracting the virus on March 24.) For the mathematically challenged, that leaves five members in the mix. Still a majority, but can BTS take the stage two men down? That decision is yet to be made. With the shortened quarantine window, J-Hope should be fine by show date, but Jungkook is a different story.

“Jungkook's participation in the later schedule in the United States will be determined by the local regulations on COVID-19,” HYBE added, in its post on the matter. They also included that it was “actively in discussion with the awards organizer.”

The group is nominated in the same category they were nominated in last year's awards—Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. BTS's fanbase, aka ARMY, and the Grammys have a contentious relationship already. After last year's loss, ARMY was none too happy with the Recording Academy, and you really, really don't want to run afoul of ARMY. Sending the best to BTS. This post will be updated as more information becomes available.
