Candidate forum for Adrian City Commission hopefuls scheduled for Thursday, June 22

ADRIAN — At least seven of the 10 candidates who will be running for three available seats on the Adrian City Commission in the August primary election are expected to participate in a candidate forum scheduled for next week.

Confirmed candidates who will participate in the forum include Bob Behnke, Chad Johnson, Joaquin Ramos, Mary Roberts, Matt Schwartz, Scott Smith and Patrick Ulanowicz. The forum is being conducted by the Lenawee County chapter of the NAACP and will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 22, in the Julianne and George Argyros Performing Arts Center at Adrian High School, 785 Riverside Ave.

The candidates will respond to questions prepared by the NAACP, according to an announcement posted on the Lenawee NAACP Members Facebook page. WLEN radio personality Dale Gaertner will moderate the discussion.

The remaining three city commissioner hopefuls are Tom Faulhaber, Steve Gonzales and Brad Watson.

The primary election is Aug. 8.

Voters will be tasked with narrowing down the list of 10 candidates to six who will advance to the general election on Nov. 7 when three commissioners will ultimately be elected.

Roberts is the only current city commissioner who is seeking reelection. Every other candidate is a new challenger.

Current city commissioner Allen Heldt, whose term ends this year, is running for mayor against incumbent Mayor Angie Sword Heath. Because they are the only two who filed to run for mayor, there won't be a primary election. They will be on the November general election ballot.

Commissioner Lad Strayer, whose term also expires this year, is not seeking a third term on the commission.

The mayor serves for a term of two years, and the commissioners have four-year terms.
