These are the candidates for California’s 3rd Congressional District

(FOX40.COM) — The seat for one of California’s geographically-largest Congressional Districts is up for election and first-time Congressman Kevin Kiley is looking to win another term.

Following redistricting in 2022, California’s 3rd Congressional District covers Sacramento, Placer, Nevada, Butte, Sierra, Plumas, Alpine, El Dorado, Mono, Yuba and Inyo counties.

Around 761,000 residents live in the district, with Placer County’s over 300,000 residents accounting for the majority of the district’s population.

Those running in this year’s election include; Congressman Kevin Kiley (R), Jessica Morse (D) and Robert Smith (Non-Party Preference).

California’s primary election is around the corner: Here’s the key dates, things to know

Robert Smith

Smith is a Northern California native and a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Global War On Terror, where he was deployed for three tours in the Middle East before medically retiring, according to Smith’s campaign site.

Following his service in the Army, Smith began working with the U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Programs as a Director.

Smith was also one of three founders of a security company in the Bay Area and Sacramento region that provided services for a multitude of clients. The business closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Smith’s campaign site.

Bringing “common sense, trust and confidence” back into the political world is what Smith says he is looking to accomplish, along with reducing “the influence of major donors, lobbyists, corporations, and special interest groups.”

Jessica Morse

Morse has worked in several wildfire prevention positions including Deputy Secretary for Forest and Wildland Resilience at the California Natural Resources Agency and last year was appointed to the U.S. Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission.

According to her campaign, Morse is a “fifth-generation Northern Californian whose ancestors crossed the Sierra on covered wagons.”

“For the last four years, I have worked on the frontline of California’s wildfire crisis, helping build a wildfire resilience program to protect communities,” Morse said.  “But, given the scale of federal land in this district, we won’t make progress without increasing and expediting federal resources.”

Kevin Kiley

Prior to being elected to his first term in Congress, Kiley served on the California State Assembly for District 6 from Dec. 5, 2015 to Nov. 30, 2022.

Kiley was born in Sacramento and graduated from Granite Bay High School in Placer County before attending Harvard University and Yale Law School.

He also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento.

During his time in the State Assembly and in his current Congressional seat, Kiley has garnered attention for his attacks against California Governor Gavin Newsom.
