Candidates compete for seat on Toledo School Board

Oct. 25—Voters in Toledo will decide next month whether to reelect current school board member Monique Norberg or elect Adam Hutchinson Sr.

The position, which comes with a four-year term, is tasked with reviewing and approving policy, hiring and negotiating with the superintendent and reviewing and adopting a budget, among other responsibilities.

Both candidates received the same three questions from The Chronicle and were asked to limit their responses to 150 words per question. Responses have been lightly edited to correct grammatical errors.

Ballots are due by 8 p.m. on Nov. 7. If a voter hasn't received their ballot by Oct. 27, the county auditor's office recommends visiting votewa.gov and selecting "my ballot," calling 360-740-1278 or visiting 351 NW North St., Chehalis. If a registered voter has moved, they can update their registration with any of the options.

Monique Norberg:

What role should the district play in a student's life?

School districts should serve as educational hubs that not only provide academic instruction but also create a supportive, inclusive and enriching environment for students to thrive. Their role extends beyond the classroom to encompass various aspects of a student's life, including their well-being and preparation for the future.

What is the biggest challenge you see facing the school district?

As Toledo School District's population is growing, there will be an increased demand for educational services and classroom space. Aging school buildings, inadequate facilities and the need for modernization can pose challenges to providing a safe and effective learning environment.

Inadequate state funding is a constant challenge for many school districts. When state funding falls short, there are constraints that can limit the availability of extracurricular activities, special education programs and other vital services that contribute to a well-rounded education. Insufficient funding can result in aging facilities that may not meet modern educational standards or require costly maintenance and repairs.

Addressing these challenges requires careful planning, collaboration with the community and potentially working with local and state authorities to secure the necessary funding and support. School board members play a crucial role in advocating for their district's needs and finding creative solutions to ensure all students have access to a quality education.

Why do you think you're the right candidate to serve on the school board?

I have served as a Toledo School Board member for the last eight years and would like to continue the forward progress the district has made. I believe I am the best candidate for the Toledo School Board because I have grown up in the community, which gives me the deep understanding of its unique needs and challenges. I've experienced the local school system firsthand and have seen how it has evolved over the years.

As a parent, I am personally invested in ensuring that our schools offer the best possible opportunities for our children. This perspective can help me make decisions that prioritize the wellbeing and success of our students.

Working collaboratively with other board members is essential for the effective functioning of the school board. I believe in open communication, cooperation, and finding common ground to make decisions that benefit our schools and community.

In summary, my deep roots in the community, personal investment as a parent, active involvement, and collaborative approach make me a strong candidate to serve on the Toledo School Board.

Adam Hutchinson Sr.:

Hutchinson Sr. did not respond to multiple emails requesting responses. In the run-up to the August primary, Hutchinson told The Chronicle he would "work to support students, parents and teachers. With my experience, understanding of community needs, and dedication, I am confident in my ability to make a positive impact on the Toledo School Board."

Hutchinson moved to Toledo in 2020.

"I am committed to serving our community and ensuring our schools provide the best education and growth opportunities," he told The Chronicle in July.
