Candyland carnival highlights these 4 events happening in Brunswick this week

Brunswick County Parks and Recreation presents a Candyland Carnival for children, kindergarten through fifth grade. Children must have an adult chaperone to attend. The event will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at the Brunswick Center at Supply, 101 Stone Chimney Road. The cost is $10 per person. Preregistration is required for everyone that is attending.

Entertainment consist of No Sleeves Magic Show, games, dancing and more. There will be pizza and candy.

Spotlight Scientist program: Marine Biologist

This family friendly program will allow visitors to step into the shoes of working scientists, describe the research they conduct, and dive into their world with hands-on activities.

The spotlight program will let visitors become a marine biologist studying sharks, dolphins, and whales.

One-day boating course

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will provide a special one-day boating course on Saturday, Jan. 28, for women. The course satisfies all state boating education requirements.

Any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, must complete an approved boating safety course before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 hp or greater on North Carolina waters.

Taught by certified USCG Auxiliary instructors, the USCG Boating America course applies to all recreational watercraft including powerboats, PWCs, sailboats and paddle craft.

The course covers general information about boats and maintenance, preparing for safe and enjoyable outings, navigation rules and aids to navigation, guidelines for operating your boat or PWC safely, what to do in case of boating emergencies, and state-specific laws and regulations.

The course will be held 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Ocean Events Center, 801 Ocean Drive, Oak Island. Course fee is $35 per person or $30 for two or more. You may pay by cash or check at the door. No credit cards accepted.

Coastal Discoveries: Sea turtles

The Coastal Discoveries program lets participants discover treasures of the tides investigating the array of things they can find on the beach and learn about the purpose of the various structures along the shore. This program will explore best beach practices and encourage you to implore your sand scavenging skills.

The program will feature sea turtles and will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Museum of Coastal Carolina, 21 E. Second St., Ocean Isle Beach. Sea turtles are frequent visitors to the North Carolina coast, with several individuals nesting on beaches from the Outer Banks to Ocean Isle Beach. Learn about the species of sea turtles in North Carolina, how volunteers track sea turtle nests, and what people can do to protect sea turtles. Then, experience being a sea turtle scientist through the Sea Turtle Quest virtual reality program.
