STORY: Mexican boxing's global superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez said his dominant victory over Britain's Callum Smith on Saturday (December 19) was down to him being the better fighter.

Speaking at a post-fight news conference in the early hours of Sunday morning (December 20) in San Antonio, Alvarez said he can adapt to any opponent, even potential upcoming opponents Caleb Plant and Billy Joe Saunders, and overcome their strengths with his own.

Canelo, whose only professional loss came against Floyd Mayweather, said he didn't pay a lot of attention to his critics or those who question his status as boxing's best pound for pound fighter.

Canelo won the WBA title on points against Smith, with the judges giving him a comfortable margin of victory.

Video Transcript

- And was he-- why would you be able to dominate them tonight?

SAUL 'CANELO' ALVAREZ: [SPEAKING SPANISH]

INTERPRETER: Because I'm better.

SAUL 'CANELO' ALVAREZ: [SPEAKING SPANISH]

INTERPRETER: Because--

SAUL 'CANELO' ALVAREZ: [SPEAKING SPANISH]

INTERPRETER: --because I'm better, because I have many abilities. I make them think about what they're going to throw and because, simply because I'm better.

- The other two big fights discussed for you primarily are Caleb Plant and Billy Joe Saunders, very different styles than Callum Smith. How do you approach those styles? And are they more difficult fighters you think for you stylistically than Callum Smith?

SAUL 'CANELO' ALVAREZ: [SPEAKING SPANISH]

INTERPRETER: Well as I said, I adapt. I adapt to all styles. I adapted for Callum Smith this time around and I'll prepare for any style. I will always prepare for any style, and I'll be ready. I'll always be ready and be the winner.

- All right. So you know you're now a four-division champion. I don't think there's any question that you're the best pound for pound fighter in the world. For anyone who wouldn't have you as that status, is that someone that you just can't convince?

SAUL 'CANELO' ALVAREZ: [SPEAKING SPANISH]

INTERPRETER: No. There's always going to be-- there's always going to be that group of people that no matter what you do, they're not-- they're never going to care. They're never going to like you.

You know, it doesn't matter how many titles you earn. They're never going to care. They're never going to like you. And you know, but there is that group of people that always stick with you, and that's why I'm happy to have. And that's who I'm happy to keep happy.

- You've moved across several divisions so seamlessly. What's the likelihood of you possibly one day wanting to entertain cruiserweight?

SAUL 'CANELO' ALVAREZ: No. It's--

[LAUGHTER]

--it's too much. It's too much, I think. 168 and 160's my best.

- OK. Thank you.
