Canisteo-Greenwood top Section V team at wrestling state dual meet finals

The Canisteo-Greenwood wrestling team picked up another dual meet Section V Championship.

Canisteo-Greenwood, Section V's small schools wrestling dual meet champion, put itself in position to win a state championship Saturday.

But Canisteo-Greenwood's drive to become the first team in Section V to win either of the state dual titles was ended in the Division 2 final by the Tioga Tigers.

Canisteo-Greenwood reached a state championship match for the second time in the five-year history of the tournaments, but Tioga of Section IV or Binghamton region rolled to a 50-7 win at Onondaga County Community College.

There were two teams that advanced out of Section V and into the Division 1 state tournament, but Fairport and Pittsford were stopped in the pool rounds.

Fairport, the Section V Division 1 champion, faced an uphill climb to the semifinal round after Brentwood of Section XI on eastern Long Island defeated the Red Raiders, 36-23.

The Red Raiders then had to win their second and final pool play dual, but Burnt Hills of Section II or Albany region won the matchup, 35-33.

Pittsford, like Fairport, had their bye during the pool play round during the first set of matchups.

The Panthers stepped on to the mat and defeated Section IV's Horseheads 54-21, but Minisink Valley of Section IX (Orange/Northern Dutchess Counties) advanced to the semifinals after a 50-12 win over Pittsford in round three.

Canisteo-Greenwood defeated Section IX's Central Valley, 47-23 in the team's tournament opener, and remained undefeated after rolling to a 57-9 win over Section XI's Shoreham-Wading River.

A third win during the team versus team matchups, 56-16 over Section II's Warrensburg-Bolton during the semifinals, gave Canisteo-Greenwood a chance to become a state champion.

Canisteo-Greenwood also reached the 2018 Division 2 championship match.
