Canisteo man, 41, charged with rape in assault of 14-year-old

Police have charged a Village of Canisteo man with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old earlier this year.

Canisteo police Monday arrested John W. Ross Jr., 41, of Charlie Drive, charging him with felony first-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

Police said Ross was being held at the Steuben County Jail pending arraignment in Bath. Jail records showed Ross was released after posting $5,000 bail.

According to the Canisteo Police Department, the charges were the result of an investigation into a July 2021 incident in which Ross is accused of sexually assaulting the teen.

Village police credited the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the Steuben County District’s Attorney’s Office and New York State Police with assisting the investigation.
