Canton Area Heritage Center compiles past newspapers. Here’s why!

CANTON—Newspapers are one of the best ways to preserve the history of a community. With that in mind, the Canton Area Heritage Center has compiled two volumes of newspaper issues from the past. One volume chronicles the July 23, 1975 Canton tornado. It starts with the July 24, 1975 Canton Daily Ledger and Peoria Journal Star issues and continues with issues from the following days and weeks featuring the aftermath of the storm. Also included are Chicago Tribune editions featuring their coverage of the event.

The second volume chronicles the history of International Harvester. It includes Canton Daily Ledger editions going back to 1936 along with Peoria Journal Star editions. The compilations provide accounts of company milestones, achievements, and events such as the Aug. 6, 1997 fire.

The exhibit consists of the actual newspapers. They’re not copies or reproductions. They’re displayed in plastic sleeves to protect the increasingly fragile paper while allowing museum visitors to easily thumb through both volumes.

The Canton Area Heritage Center is at 111 South Main Street. It’s open Fridays 10 a.m. to noon; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sundays, 1 to 4 p.m.

There is no admission charge. However, donations are welcome.
