Canton firefighters fight off blaze at commercial building housing two businesses

CANTON ‒ Fire damaged two businesses located in a warehouse at 2318 13th St. NE early Thursday morning.

One business, Stark Trailer, sustained a total loss, but the Canton Fire Department was able to limit the damage to Dad's Deal's Discount Store, fire department Division Chief Steve Henderson said in a press release.

Firefighters responded at 4:15 a.m. after receiving a report of a fire coming out of the roof. The unoccupied building was in flames when fire crews arrived.

Online records of the Stark County Auditor's Office show the one-story, 21,706-square-foot warehouse is owned by The ABCD Inc., a nonprofit community development organization. The original building dates to 1935. Additions were made in 1957.

Tod Yackey, one of three owners of Stark Trailer, said the contents of their portion of the building were not insured. He said business partner Zachary Stewart had insurance on the building, which he was buying on land contract from ABCD. The third partner in the business is Steven Harbourt.

Yackey estimated the value of the loss at $50,000 to the contents of the building. He said the company has been in business for seven months, including the last five months spent at the property on 13th Street.

Yackey said the loss sustained in the fire is devastating.

"We will find a new building and we'll start over and continue building trailers. We'll be up and running in no time," he said.

Stark Trailer builds trailers that are sold through five dealers.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.
