CANTON--Joe Norton’s championship at 170 pounds the Canton Little Giants wrestling team finished second in the Mid- Illini Conference meet held in Metamora on Saturday.

Washington won the meet with 248 points to Canton’s 145. Morton was third at 131 points and Pekin fourth at 79:

Norton, a junior, boosted his season record to 30-0 with his performance.

“He’s not a kid that shies away from tough competition,” said Canton coach Zach Crawford.

“He has risen to the occasion every single time and wrestled really, really well.”

The Little Giants also had 152-pound senior Andrew Hedges voted all-conference by the league coaches for an impressive second place finish.

With seven wrestlers in the finals, Canton also got second place finishes from Jack Jochums at 106 pounds, Trevor Hedges at 126, Wesley Chaney at 145, Danny Murphy at 182 and Weston Swise at 285.

“Out of 12 wrestlers we had 10 placers,” said Crawford.

“The people in the finals were not a surprise.”

“I think we wrestled pretty well for the day. It’s not the way we wanted it to end but all things considered, we wrestled pretty well.”

The Little Giants entered their final week of the regular season and have meets Wednesday at Peoria Heights and Thursday at Farmington.

Canton will compete at the Tremont Regional on Feb. 5.

“We’re getting to the point where we have still got work to do but a lot of it is minor adjustments,” said Crawford of the state series ahead.

“Physically and mentally we’re starting to climb.”

“I feel really good with the lineup we’re taking to regional.”

•The Canton boys basketball team saw a chance to end a 13-game losing streak slip away at the Metamora Classic on Saturday.

The Little Giants saw a 47-36 lead they held over 17-5 Chicago Lindbloom at halftime fade away and they suffered a 53-51 loss. Canton was outscored 15-4 in the fourth quarter.

Along with the 58-41 loss it suffered to Bourbonnais on Saturday, Canton is 1-17 for the season.

Metamora downed Canton 72-41 on Friday.

The Little Giants host Brimfield at 7 p.m. Wednesday, travel to Morton on Friday to Geneseo on Saturday.

•The Canton girls basketball team dropped a 61-39 decision to Morton on Monday to slip to 7-13 for the season.

A game scheduled with Metamora on Saturday was rescheduled for Feb. 5.

The Lady Giants fell to Washington 48-23 last Thursday.
