Canton to take on Maine for spot in Little League World Series

A trip to Williamsport is on the line when Little Leaguers from Canton, Mass. and Gray, Maine clash Thursday night.

After besting Salem, NH 5-0 Wednesday night, Canton will play a win-or-go-home game against Maine for the New England Regional Crown.

The two squads met on Monday, a 7-1 triumph for Maine behind a dual effort behind Mason Amergian. In addition to 5 and 2/3 1-run innings, Amergian blasted a grand slam in the third inning to break open the game. Canton finally got on the board when Nathan Chabot scored on an error by Gray’s shortstop.

Canton Pitcher Andrew Sullivan allowed only two hits in six scoreless innings in the team’s 5-0 win over New Hampshire over New Hampshire.

First pitch between Massachusetts and Maine will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Smithfield, Rhode Island is also a game away from a Williamsport berth. Playing out of the Metro Region, Rhode Island will face an undefeated New York squad on Friday. Smithfield, state champs for the first time in 56 years, defeated New Jersey, 10-5, in the semifinals on Wednesday in Bristol, Conn. Wednesday.
