Canton man charged with aggravated murder after fatal stabbing at apartment complex

CANTON ‒ A city man is dead after police said he was stabbed several times Wednesday evening at a Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority apartment complex.

Canton police were called to Girard Gardens, 2215 Tuscarawas St. E, around 8:40 p.m. and found a man in the rear of the building with numerous stab wounds, according to a news release issued Thursday.

Keith D. Griggs, 54, was taken to Aultman Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Police said they found the suspect, Willis R. Kennedy, 38, of Canton, nearby. He was arrested and charged with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony. He remains in the Stark County Jail.

According to a police complaint filed in Canton Municipal Court, Kennedy ambushed Griggs and stabbed him several times in the head and body. Kennedy's address is listed at the apartment complex. It is unclear if the victim lived in the SMHA housing complex.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Kennedy is set to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Friday in municipal court.
