Canton man facing charges over October crash that killed motorcyclist

CANTON ‒ A Canton man is facing charges tied to an October traffic crash that killed a motorcyclist.

Michael W. Poland, 45, faces counts of misdemeanor vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter for the death of 70-year-old James V. Horsley of Massillon. Poland also is charged with failing to yield right of way.

Horsley was killed when his motorcycle collided with Poland's Hyundai Accent around 4:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Deuber Avenue SW and Fohl Road SW in Canton Township.

Poland pleaded not guilty Friday in Canton Municipal Court.

According to Ohio State Highway Patrol, Horsley was driving a 2005 Harley Davidson south on Dueber when he collided with Poland's northbound 2013 Hyundai Accent as it attempted to turn left onto Fohl.

Horsley, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital by Canton Township EMS and was later pronounced deceased, the patrol said.

Poland and his passengers were not injured. Alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash, the patrol said.
