Canton man killed in 3-vehicle crash in Morrow County

MOUNT GILEAD — A 55-year-old Canton man was killed Wednesday evening in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 in Morrow County.

The Mount Gilead post of the Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal traffic crash that occurred near milepost 146 in Harmony Township.

Abraham Smith Jr., 55, of Canton was operating a gray 2006 Cadillac CTS.

Samual McConn, 63, of Sauquoit, New York, was operating a tractor-trailer.

Tiffany Strayer, 32, of Keller, Texas, was operating a gray 2021 Toyota 4-Runner.

The Cadillac was southbound on I-71. The semi-tractor/trailer was northbound on I-71 in the middle lane. The Toyota was northbound on I-71 in the right lane. The Cadillac crossed the median and was struck by the semi, according to a press release.

The semi struck the Toyota and each continued off the east side of the roadway. Both the Cadillac and tractor-trailer caught fire, the post said.

Smith was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene. McConn was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital with minor injuries. Strayer was not injured in the crash. All occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The Ohio Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Morrow County EMS, Big Walnut Fire Department, Ohio Department of Transportation, Morrow County EMA, 24/7 Towing and A-Ray’s Towing.

The traffic crash remains under investigation.
