CANTON − A city police officer riding in a cruiser suffered possible injuries when the vehicle slid off a road and crashed into a tree Friday afternoon, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Another Canton police vehicle took the male officer to Aultman Hospital for a medical evaluation.

The police officer who was driving the cruiser was not hurt, the patrol said.

The crash took place around 3:30 p.m. on 18th Street NW near Myrtle Avenue NW.

The patrol said the cruiser, a 2017 Ford Explorer, was going south on Myrtle Avenue and about to attempt a traffic stop. The officer driving the cruiser had not engaged the vehicle's emergency lights or sirens at that point. On turning right to go west onto 18th Street, the cruiser slid off the south side of 18th Street and hit a tree.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, which usually investigates traffic crashes involving on-duty Canton police officers, is investigating. The patrol's statement did not identify a cause of the collision. The patrol said Canton police assisted state troopers at the crash scene.
