Canton Local Schools announced the hiring of Troy Haught as Canton South High School head volleyball coach.

Haught was most recently the assistant indoor volleyball coach at the University of New Mexico. Before joining UNM, Haught was the head coach for the Notre Dame College volleyball program. During his tenure, he led the Falcons to a 16-win season in 2016, 12 more wins than in 2015, and the most wins the program had put together since the 2009 campaign.

“I would like to thank Superintendent Brett Yeagley, the Canton South administration, and the Board of Education for this opportunity,” Haught said. “I look forward to working at Canton South and leading the volleyball program. Being a Stark County native from Minerva, when the opportunity presented itself, I decided I was ready to move back to the area and help build the future of the Canton South volleyball program. The team has great potential, and I am excited about working with the student-athletes and coming back home.”

Haught previously served as the head volleyball coach at Urbana University for three seasons. Under his leadership, Urbana had its best conference start in a decade. Haught also has coached at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, Oberlin College, Minerva High School and GlenOak High School.

In addition, Haught has an extensive background coaching Junior Olympic Volleyball at the regional and national levels for Elite Sports. Two of his teams advanced to the AAU Nationals. In five seasons at the high school level, he compiled a 71-48 record.

Haught received his undergraduate degree from Kent State University in 2009. He competed at the national club level in high school and continues to play competitive indoor and men’s sand volleyball.

“We are pleased to hire someone with Troy’s extensive background as our head volleyball coach,” athletic director Matt Dennison said. “During my conversations with him, I was impressed by his leadership skills, coaching philosophy, and level of commitment to student-athletes. Troy will be an excellent fit for our athletic department, and I have no doubt that our volleyball program will thrive under his direction.”
