Fire destroys garage and addition in Canton Township

CANTON TWP. ‒ Firefighters from the township had help from several other departments Wednesday for a house fire on 48th Street SW.

Cleveland Avenue S between Ridge Avenue and 53rd Street was temporarily closed Wednesday afternoon to allow for emergency vehicle access, said Scott Johnson, public information officer for the township Fire Department. The department was called at 12:42 p.m. to a one-and-a-half-story bungalow at 120 48th St. SW.

"The fire started in the attached garage," Johnson said.

It spread to the house, where children were home at the time. Johnson said everyone escaped unharmed, and the American Red Cross was called to assist the family with housing. The house is owned by Hannah Luke, according to Stark County real estate records.

"There was an addition between the garage and the house," Johnson said. "So the garage and the addition were a total loss."

The area has no fire hydrants, so multiple agencies provided water trucks to help extinguish the blaze. Johnson said they still were putting out hot spots Wednesday afternoon.
