Canton's farmers market marks first paw print on new event

Jul. 27—CANTON — Smathers Farmers Market will be holding its first ever dog days of summer event from 3:30 — 6:30 July 28, at 118 Main St. in Canton.

The market has always been a dog friendly place, but this will be a special event featuring vendors selling dog treats, a trick contest at 5 p.m. with ribbons for the dogs and a special guest groomer from Smoky Mountain Pet & Farm Sitting.

The dog days of summer are those hot, slow days that take place toward the end of summer.

Tara Carroll, market manager and events coordinator of Smathers Farmers and Public Market, said the event will be to celebrate any four-legged friends you may have. "We'd like to invite all of our shoppers to bring their well-behaved and leashed dogs to the market," she said.

There will be live music provided by Doug and Lisa, produce vendors, craft vendors, cold lemonade and beer from Bearwaters brewing.

Carroll said she expects to have at least 25 vendors and is hoping for about 200 customers

"Haywood County Animal Shelter will be there either with live dogs that are up for adoption or photos and information of them. Grateful Table across the street will be slinging hot dogs in celebration of the day," Carroll said.

Smathers Farmers Market is open 3:30 — 6:30 p.m. every Thursday. The market holds other events toward the end of every month during the season. Other special events will be Back to School and 100 years of football Aug. 25 and Oktoberfest Sept. 25.
