Canvass of local elections set

Nov. 13—The Huntsville ISD Board of Trustees will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Hawkins Administration Building, to canvass the votes for School Board Trustees from the November 7 General Election. The board will canvass the results for Position 5, with Cathy Schweitzer, who ran unopposed, and Position 4. John Hendricks ran against Ryan LeNorman for Pos. 4, with Hendricks taking 2,795 votes to LeNorman's 1,843 votes, with a total of 4,638 voters casting their votes.

"I am humbled and feel blessed by the amount of support I received," Hendricks said, following the election on November 7. "I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work with the rest of the board to do all that can be done to continue the upward trajectory the school district has been on. I am doing it for those attending now, for future generations and the community at large.

"Winning this election is less about me, but for the school district and the community because it is a team effort," Hendrick said. "And the more people that are involved ad excited about doing all they can to improve the school district is a win for everybody."

The City of Huntsville will canvass votes in a Special Session at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Huntsville Public Library. The election results will confirm the new Mayor and four City wards. Those candidates include Russell Humphrey, Tore Fossum, Casey Cox, Anissa Antoine, and incumbent Jon Strong.

The vote getters are expected to be sworn in at the next regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

In the New Waverly ISD School Board race, Shawn Byler took Position 1 with 502 votes against Steve VanWagner's 344 votes.

Byler took time to reflect on the 2023 campaign.

"First off, I would like to thank God for allowing me to be in the position I am in so I can give back to our students. Secondly, I would like to thank my family for always supporting me," Byler said. "Running for a political office is very new to us and something I never thought I would be doing. I also would like to thank everyone else that supported me during my campaign. Every vote counted and I truly appreciate you showing up for me. The turnout in New Waverly was great, and I was glad to get to talk with several of you.

"To the voters that did not vote for me. You had a tough decision as I believe myself and Mr. VanWagner share a lot of the same views, ideas, and values," Byler said. "I am looking forward to earning your trust and proving I am a worthy candidate. I am excited to get more involved and with the task of being a board trustee. Thank you again and let's go Bulldogs."

Greg Buckner ran unopposed for Position 2 on the New Waverly ISD Board of Trustees, garnering 747. Jacob Slott ran unopposed for Position 3, receiving 759 votes.

New Waverly ISD has not set a date and time for canvassing votes. We will update the story when an agenda is posted.
