Canyon boys, girls take first in Class 4A area meet
CANYON — Last week, the Canyon Eagles finished first at the boys and girls district track meet with Randall finishing second. A week later at the area meet, not much changed.
The Canyon boys and girls teams finished first at the 3&4-4A area meet with Randall finishing second in each. The girls finished with 197 points to Randall's 120, while the Eagle boys claimed 117 to Randall's 91.
First, the boys, where Panhandle teams did quite well.
Randall's Nathan Baker took home gold in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.05 seconds, while Dumas' Oliver Ortiz finished first in the 400 dash at 47.95 seconds. Alexander Niemic won gold in the 800 with a time of 1:56.03.
Niemic kickstarted a string of wins for Canyon boys as Ryan Fernandez took home gold in the 1,600 with a time of 4:34.37. Lathan Lewter followed that up with a time of 9:52.56 in the 3,200 for a first-place finish. Seth Green kept the good times rolling for Canyon with victory in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.54 seconds.
Randall finished second on the day for a reason, though, and it's because the Raiders had their fair share of victories, too. The 400 relay team of Collin Miller, Baker, Tryston Sanchez and Shaquorie Butler took home the gold with a time of 42.53.
Dumas had plenty of other results to be proud of, too. The 1,600m relay of Aaron Lawrence, Imanol Marquez, Andrew Flores and Ortiz finished first with a time of 3:18.30.
West Plains also had a boys victory on the day as Brycen Williams won the high jump at 6-feet, 6 inches. Lance Ottinger of Dumas won the boys pole vault at 14-feet while Randall's Miller won the long jump at 22-9.75. Butler gave the Raiders another win with a 45-10.25 in the triple jump and Pampa's Madox Jones clinched a spot at regionals with a discus throw of 161-10.
It was more than just a boys club, though, as the girls put on quite a display, too.
Randall's Tahlie Brandt swept the wheelchair events with a time of 21.25 in 100, 400 run of 1:27.98 and shot put of 15-8. It looked like it would be the Lady Raiders' day as they proceeded to win the 100 with Kassiddy Walker (12.67) and the 200 with Promise Sherwood (26.03). Canyon showed its the district champion for a reason, though, as Addyson Bristow won the Lady Eagles' first event of the day with a 400 time of 58.16.
Canyon's Abree Winfrey won yet another race in her illustrious career with an 800 time of 2:14.06. Her teammate Hannah Stuart won the 1,600 with ease in 4:58.43. Stuart cruised to victory in the 3,200 as well with a time of 11:01.98.
Nickilah Whatley gave Hereford a win with a 110 hurdle time of 16:03. Winfrey picked up another win for Canyon in the 300 hurdles at 44.93 before Randall won the 400m relay in 49.13. That team was comprised of Gaby Deanda, Sherwood, Walker and Crystal Johnson. Walker, Deanda and Sherwood teamed with Tenera Gray to win the 800 right after that with a time of 1:43.45.
Canyon got back on the first place podium in the 1,600 relay as Bristor, Winfrey, Megan Pullen and Brooklyn Kinsey combined for a time of 3:57.85. Kashlee Dickinson kept the Lady Eagles soaring in the pole vault with height of 13-4, while Kinsey won the long jump at 17-7.75. Gray won the triple jump for Randall at 36-6.50.
The Region I-4A meet is slated to be held April 28-29 at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.
