Lady Eagles, Eagles turn in top performances en route to titles at Amarillo Relays

It may be called the Amarillo Relays, but the prestigious track meet belonged to Canyon High School last weekend.

Both Canyon track and field teams took top honors at the meet with the girls winning with a final score of 139 to Amarillo High's 128. The Eagles were second heading into the final event of the day, but took first and made it a team sweep with a score of 98 to Lubbock-Cooper's 95 after finishing ahead of the Pirates in the 1,600-meter relay. Canyon finished second in that event at three minutes, 25.86 seconds, while Cooper was third at 3:28.77. Dumas won the event at 3:22.19.

It was an exciting weekend of action all around with plenty of interesting results. We'll start by going through the girls events.

The triple jump champion was Lubbock-Cooper's Sofia De Groot at 38-feet, one inch. The Lady Pirates also took a victory in the 400-meter relay with a time of 48.91 seconds, while Canyon's Abree Winfrey took the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.56. Keely Harper of Amarillo High won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15:67. Kassiddy Walker from Randall took the gold in the 100 at 12:27.

LCP was victorious again in the 800 relay with a final time of 1:43.63. Amarillo High's Sierra Cornell took the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.54. The 300 hurdles wound up being a great race with Winfrey taking victory at 44.12, edging out Harper's time of 44.56. The 200 was taken by Lubbock-Cooper's Niomi Wines at 25.12 in another photo-finish as she beat out the 25.14 time of Palo Duro's Juantai Williams.

The 1600-meter run was no contest as Canyon's Hannah Stuart easily took victory at 5:02.96. Amarillo High took the 1,600 meter relay with a time of 3:58.31.

On Friday, Cashlee Dickson of Canyon took gold in the pole vault with a height of 12-7, while Wines won the high jump with a height of 5-8. De Groot was the long jump champion at 19-00.75, while Canyon's Taryn Gullick won the discus with a height of 124-6. Emmalynn Reilly of AHS won the shot put at 36-03.50 and Canyon's Stuart took the 3,200 at 10:58.12.

The boys competition had several highlights, as well.

The triple jump was won by a competitor out of Clovis, New Mexico, with Robert Nora clearing 45-06.50. LCP won the 400 with a time of 42.86, while Canyon's Alex Niemicc won the 800 with a time of 1:56.99. The Eagles were victorious in the 100 hurdles as Seth Green finished with a time of 14.76, just 0.18 ahead of Nora.

Randall's Nathan Baker took home the gold in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.57, 0.33 seconds ahead of Bushland's Tate Butcher. Canyon's 800 meter relay team finished in first place with a time of 1:31.32, just edging out Hereford's time of 1:31.71. Dumas' Oliver Ortiz, a future Northern Colorado football player, won the 400 meter dash at 49.17.

The 300 meter hurdles was a tight one with Green winning at 39.04, Dumas' Matthew Reynaga finishing second at 39.29 and Canyon's Andrew Stewart taking third at 39.99. Callan Ritz of LCP won gold in the 200 meter dash at 22.61. Noah Watt of AHS finished first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:31.7 to squeeze past Clovis' Samuel Fuentes, who finished in 4:32.10.

On Friday, Vega's Diego Martinez won the high jump at 6-4 while Nora won the long jump at 21-7. Michael McCloy won the pole vault with a height of 14-6 with Jadyn Fletcher of Hereford winning the shot put at 49-01.50. Amarillo's Danny Bentley won the discus at 149-2 and Watt won the 3,200 at 9:45.12.
