Canyon ISD thanks Jenkins for his service at farewell ceremony

CANYON - The Canyon Independent School District said goodbye one last time to longtime school board member Bill Jenkins Monday at a ceremony held at Happy State Bank Stadium in Canyon.

Jenkins resigned in December after more than nine years of service on the board to be able to spend more time with family.

Canyon Superintendent Darryl Flusche spoke about coming onto the board at about the same time as Jenkins and serving with him.

"He and I grew together on the board to learn all the cultures and people of the district,” Flusche said. “I really am glad to have been a part of that with him on the board. I appreciate the time and energy he put forward for the staff and students of this community. He always worked hard for the needs of our students.”

Fellow trustee Catherine Wiegand spoke about the longtime board member and what he brought to the board.

“He has brought so much to the board with his financial background and experience being a school auditor," Weigand said. “He brought a lot of valuable experience to the board. You work with these board members and make big decisions with them, and it is bittersweet to lose someone like Bill and the relationships you have cultivated, but I am excited to see what the next person brings to the board. I am so grateful for his service.”

Board President Jennie Winegarner said that the board will miss his contributions.

“We are so thankful for his diligence and passion for our kids,” Winegarner said. “His contributions will be sorely missed. He has been on this board through some pivotal times for this district. Under his leadership, we passed an unprecedented proposition in 2018, allowing us to build two new schools and improve our facilities. We will miss his heart for our students and helping to provide them with skills that will prepare them for when they leave our campuses.”

Matt Parker, elected to the board in 2021, said Jenkins' leadership and character will be missed.

“Bill was there for many major changes to improve the district,” Parker said. “He brought a level of knowledge and history that was a great strength to the board. He knew what he believed in and stood up for it. He was resolute in standing up for his beliefs and the students.”

Jenkins said that his time on the board made him a better person.

“I am thankful for all we accomplished, and being on this board made me a better person,” Jenkins said. “I am satisfied with the work I have done, and my time on the board was well spent. This experience allowed me to create better relationships and understanding of the people of this district. I will miss all the board members, teachers and administrators I have worked with.”
