Canyon moves into 4A D-I Top 10, Tascosa rises in latest DCTF rankings

The latest release of Dave Campbell's Texas Football high school football rankings had seven teams from the Panhandle included in the top 10 of their respective classes.

The Tascosa Rebels (5-1) moved up one spot for the second week in a row and are now ranked No. 8 in the Class 5A Div. I rankings following a 36-14 victory at home over district rival Abilene High last Friday night.

Tascosa's strong defense is allowing 13.5 points per game, while the high-powered offense has averaged 38.7 per outing. The Rebels will be facing their next challenge against Lubbock Monterey on the road this week.

In Class 4A Div. I, the unbeaten Canyon Eagles (6-0) moved into the top 10 and will be ranked No. 9 heading into their bye week. Despite the loss of senior quarterback Derrek Clements to injury, the Eagles stepped up big last week with senior playmaker Javin Cash paving the way to a 44-30 win over Andrews.

The Bushland Falcons (6-0) maintained their spot at No. 6 following a 56-14 takedown of previously unbeaten El Paso Riverside. Dawson Jaco and Co. will face their first district test this week when they face a Muleshoe team that is riding a five-game win streak.

The Canadian Wildcats (3-2) stayed at No. 5 in the Class 3A Div. II rankings following a 56-21 win at home over Randall. The Wildcats will travel to Childress this week for their district opener.

Stratford (5-0) kept their spot at No. 7 in the Class 2A Div. I rankings after eking out a hard-fought 28-21 win over Perryton on the road last Friday night. All eyes will be on Stratford this week when they host Farwell in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Wellington (4-1) was idle last week and is still No. 3 in the Class 2A Div. II rankings. The Skyrockets and head coach Greg Proffitt are prepared to begin the district season this week when they host a Shamrock team on a four-game winning streak.

Happy (4-1) stayed at No. 6 in the Class 1A Six-Man Div. I rankings after a bye week. The Cowboys will host the undefeated McLean Tigers this week in what should be one of the top games in the region.
