Canyon wins District 4-4A track and field title for boys and girls

State, regional and area track meets are still to come this season. For 4-4A, the area meet will be held at West Texas A&M in the coming days, but the district meet took place this past week in Borger.

If you've paid attention to track and field these past few years, you probably know which team stood out the most.

The Canyon Eagles won the District 4-4A title in boys and girls track and field. The Eagles had to battle as they took first with 151 points to Randall's 136 points, while Dumas ended with 106. The Lady Eagles had an easier time, taking 249 points to Randall's 158.

In the boys 100, Nathan Baker of Randall took home the gold as has been the case for much of the season. He finished the event with a time of 10.60 seconds, while Pampa's Avery Ferguson won the wheelchair event with a time of 22.63. Hereford's Esteban Martinez won the 200with a time of 22.27, just 0.01 seconds ahead of Perryton's Daxton Rigdon.

Dumas' Oliver Ortiz won the 400 with a time of 48.70 seconds, while Ferguson won the wheelchair event with a time of 2:05.00. Canyon got its first win of the day from Alex Niemiec, who took home gold in the 800 with a time of 2:00.91. Ryan Fernandez won the 1,600with a time of 4:50.72, just 0.06 seconds ahead of Niemiec, who was just 0.1 second ahead of his teammate, Lathan Lewter.

Fernandez also took victory in the 3,200 run with a time of 10:36.97, just 0.04 seconds ahead of Lewter. Seth Green won the 110 hurdles for Canyon with a time of 14.74 wile winning the 300 hurdles in 40.27, just 0.02 seconds ahead of Andrew Stewart. Randall took victory in the 400 relay with a time of 43.68, while Perryton won the 800 relay with a time of 1:32.35. Dumas won the 1,600 relay in 3:26.82.

West Plains' Brycen Williams won the high jump with a height of 6-foot, 4 inches, while Dumas' Lance Ottinger won the pole vault with a height of 13-6. Randall's Collin Miller won the long jump with a distance of 23-0.75 while the Raiders' Shaquorie Butler won the triple jump at 45-9. Jadyn Fletcher of Hereford won the shot put at 49-9 while Nathan Orcutt of Borger won the wheelchair shot put at 13-5. Pampa's Maddox Jones won the discus with ease at 161-0.

The girls athletes also showed out in all of the same events.

Randall's Kassiddy Walker won the 100 at 12.16 while the Lady Raiders' Tahlie Brandt won the wheelchair event in 20.88. Kilyn Maquez of Canyon won the 200 in 25.71 while Addyson Bristow of Canyon won the 400 in 1:00.44. Brandt won the wheelchair 400 in 1:30.23.

Canyon's Abree Winfrey won the girls 800 in 2:20.58, while her teammate Hannah Stuart won the 1,600 in 5:09.66. Stuart also took gold in the 3,200 with a time of 11:11.84.

The 100 hurdles was won by Nickilah Whatley of Hereford in 16.27, while Winfrey claimed gold in the 300 hurdles in 46.02. The 400 relay was won by Randall in 49.65 before the Lady Raiders won the 800 relay in 1:45.81. Canyon won the 1,600 relay in 4:07.07.

Shyann Lawrence and Tenera Gray of Randall tied for gold in the high jump at 5-feet, while Kashlee Dickinson of Canyon won the pole vault with a height of 12-6. Brooklyn Kinsey of Canyon won the long jump with a distance of 18-1.75 and won the triple jump at 37-2. Adraya Loftis of Borger won the shot put at 36-2.50 with Taryn Gullick securing the discuss with a distance of 130-8.
