Cap’n Crunch Is Making a Berrytastic Pancake Batter

As far as quintessential home-cooked breakfasts go, you can’t really beat a nice stack of blueberry pancakes. And when it comes to ranking still-popular sugary cereals, Cap’n Crunch and its very berry-flavored offshoots are towards the top of the hierarchy. The only problem is that eating a ton of Crunchberries and blueberry pancakes in the same not-so-balanced breakfast would be pretty much impossible without suffering from some sort of medically inadvisable carb overload.

Well, that’s about to change if a recent Instagram post from food sleuth @JunkBanter is to be believed. Folks, we’re talking about a Crunchberry-heavy Cap’n Crunch pancake batter.

Remember when they had a Pancake Cap’n Crunch? Well now they have Cap’n Crunch Pancake Mix! Coming soon (or at least eventually): Cap’n Crunch’s Berrytastic Pancake Mix, from the makers of Aunt Jemima. The pancake mix has “flavored bits” to add a Crunch Berry flavor to your pancakes. All you gotta do is add water, which is about where my culinary skills stop.

Cap’n Crunch’s Berrytastic Pancake Mix is billed as an all-star breakfast partnership between Aunt Jemima and the cartoon Cap’n, this batter is a “buttermilk mix with flavored bits.” While that sounds sufficiently vague, one could probably assume that said flavor bits are made up of the Crunchberries you’d find in a box of one of Cap’n Crunch’s many berry-inclusive cereals. The fact that the box appears to depict red, blue, and purple specks (the primary Crunchberry color palette) further drives the point home. The best part is that all you have to do is add water to the mix, put it on a griddle or into a waffle maker, and you’re good to go.

In a way, the impending existence of Cap’n Crunch pancakes closes a sort of narrative loop when it comes to this particular cereal brand vis a vis other breakfast foods. A few years ago, there was a limited-edition Blueberry Pancake flavor of Cap’n Crunch which looks like it turned that breakfast food into its own crunch “berry” of sorts. So hats off to the seafaring cartoon cereal salesman for repaying the favor he owes to the world of pancakes.

If you’re already planning on buying a box of this for a new spin on a nostalgic breakfast, you’re going to have to wait a little bit. According to Best Products, Quaker Oats has only recently received a trademark for the product name, so it might be a little while. But patience is a virtue, and waiting for these sweet, colorful pancakes will be worth it.
