Aug. 19—Rummage sale

ROCKPORT — The Old Sloop Rummage Sale, hosted by First Congregational Church of Rockport, will be in the church's Fellowship Hall this Friday, Aug. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bargain hunters may enter at 12 School St. and take the elevator up. Carillon concerts

Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish hosts a summer carillon concert this Friday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m., rain or shine.

"This year, Luann Pallazola, Cynthia Cafasso, and Thomas Dort have once again prepared programs that include familiar classical and international pieces, popular hymns and songs, patriotic melodies, and even selections especially for children," said the Rev. Jim Achadinha in an email. "We are especially excited that Thomas Dort, a young disciple who just turned 14 years old and learned to play the carillon bells during the (COVID-19) pandemic, will perform along with our talented adult musicians!"

"Although the bells can be heard from blocks away, the sound is always best near the church," Achadinha said. Listeners may park in the parking lot at the church, 142 Prospect St. in Gloucester

Other carillon concerts are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 26, and Sept. 2.

School clothing

St. John's Episcopal Church, 48 Middle St. in Gloucester is offering special tables of back-to-school clothing in its Regal Rummage Shop. Check out quality clothing for infants, toddlers and children of all ages. Donations of quality children's clothing will also be also welcomed, so that all of Gloucester's children will have what they need to start the school year. The shop is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mastercard and Visa accepted on purchases over $10. Free parking available at 33 Washington St

Vivekananda celebration

To celebrate the historic visit of Swami Vivekananda 128 years ago, the Annisquam Village Church will host the Vedanta Society of Providence at worship on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. The church is located at 820 Washington St. in Gloucester. Swami Vivekananda is credited with bringing Hinduism to the West.

Swami Yogatmananda and Rev. Sue Koehler-Arsenault will be speaking on "Unity in Diversity." Music will be offered by the church choir, under the direction of Kathleen Adams, and members of the Vedanta Society. A repast of Indian food will follow. All are welcome to attend.

Supper and supplies

West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church, UCC, 488 Essex Ave. in Gloucester, is hosting a Ham & Bean Supper on Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Jazz Dynamics in concert at 7 p.m. Tickets for the dinner and show may be purchased in advance through the church office (978-283-2817) for $30; or $20 at the door for just the concert.

Also, during August the church is collecting back-to-school supplies (pencils, erasers, glue sticks, notebooks, backpacks, pencil boxes, etc.) to be distributed by The Open Door. All donations may be placed in the Mission Bin next to the church's mailbox.

Lutheran change

St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington St. in Gloucester, has changed to its summer schedule. Worship services are every Sunday at 9 a.m., in-person and on Zoom. All ages, genders, sexual orientations, races, and faiths — including non-believers and persons curious about faith — are welcome. Congregations of both Gloucester's and Rockport's United Methodist churches will meet together will meet together every Sunday at 10 a.m. during August at the Rockport UMC, 36 Broadway.

Armenian picnic

HAVERHILL — The Armenian Church at Hye Pointe, 1280 Boston Road in Haverhill, is hosting its annual picnic on Sunday, Aug. 28, from noon to 5 p.m.

Menu includes lamb shish, losh and chicken kebab, kheyma, pastries and beverages, including beer and wine. Live music will be by the Jason Naroian Ensemble and there will be cash raffles. The hall is air-conditioned or bring lawn chairs for sitting outside.

Youth to Israel

Lappin Foundation invites the community to its 2022 Youth to Israel Adventure Welcome Home Event on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. at Temple Ner Tamid, 368 Lowell Street in Peabody, featuring keynote speaker Josh Kraft, President of Kraft Family Philanthropies. Some of the teens will share their post-trip reflections about what this life-changing adventure meant to them. The Foundation will present the Robert Israel Lappin Award for Inspirational leadership to Lucy New and Sofia Vatnik, co-chairs of the Teen Antisemitism Task Force. A dessert reception will follow. Saints series

This season, the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport, in collaboration with the Assisi Project, is hosting special series of mini-retreats called the Saints of Summer. Each mini-retreat will begin with the celebration of Holy Mass and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8 a.m. After a shared prayer, either Cliff Garvey or the Rev. James Achadinha will offer a reflection on the life, inspiration, and veneration of a saint whose life of holiness has inspired men and women all around the world. There will be time for questions and faith sharing, too. After reflection and discussion, all are invited to pray in silent adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and in veneration of the holy relics of each saint of the day. Each morning of prayer will conclude at 9:30 a.m. with the Holy Rosary followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Here's the upcoming schedule:

Intro to Judaism

Registration is open for Introduction to Judaism, a free 21-week course designed for individuals of faiths other than Judaism who want to explore Judaism or who are considering conversion to Judaism. Thrift store

The Cape Ann Thrift Shop, located at the Trinity Congregational Church UCC, 70 Middle St., Gloucester, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Inventory of clothing, jewelry and accessories to household items frequently changes, but it is not uncommon to find barely-used items or new items that still have their tags on them. Donations accepted during operating hours.

Masks are required in the church; the chat rooms opens at 9:30 a.m. A time of prayer and reflection also is offered Thursdays at 7 p.m. via Zoom. All are welcome. The Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport's churches are open for Masses without capacity limits and reservations.

Saturday Vigil Masses are at 4 p.m. at St Ann Church, 74 Pleasant St. in Gloucester, and 6 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect St. in Gloucester.

Sunday Masses will at 7 and 11:45 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 8:15 a.m. in St. Ann Church, and 10 a.m. in Saint Joachim Church, 56 Broadway in Rockport. Sunday Mass will also be offered online at the churches' YouTube channel, https://bit.ly/3oXvBnf.

Daily Masses are celebrated at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m., Thursdays and Friday at 8 a.m., and on the first Saturday of the month at 8 a.m.

The sacrament of confession is offered Wednesdays from 6:05 to 6:45 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church and by appointment.

Masks are required. There will be social distancing by having every other pew roped off and not available at St. Ann during the Masses at 4 p.m. Saturday and 8:15 a.m. Sunday.

First Baptist Church of Gloucester, 38 Gloucester Ave., hosts Sunday Services at 10 a.m. The sanctuary is open for worship, and been marked with arrows for entrance and exit, and some pews have been blocked to help observe proper COVID-19 protocols. Masks are required at all times, as well as practicing social distancing. The service is also available on Facebook Live for viewing as it is being conducted, or for viewing at a future time if desired. All are welcome.

First Baptist Church of Rockport, 4 High St. in Rockport, worships on Sundays at 10 a.m. Worship takes place in the sanctuary and is live streamed via facebook. There is a robust Children's Church program divided by respective ages that takes place during the service. The service includes traditional and contemporary worship music.
