Cape Cod weather forecast: Will temps top 50 this week?

It's the time of year where you can find a protected spot in the sun and feel pretty dang toasty. Then, you dip into the shade for a bit and it still feels like winter. So, you flip up the hood and sigh.

There are steps you can take to battle this perplexing weather duality. My favorite solution is to order seeds. Thus, I am expecting a shipment of Sugar Daddy Snap Pea seeds in the next few days. They are the short, bushy types and supposedly stringless, a miracle of modern pea technology. You can pop them into the ground this time of year and some say they are foolproof — I will certainly test that theory!

Weather-wise, it looks like we're in for a dubious Tuesday. Nothing to get alarmed about, but it might be tough to write a poem extolling the day's virtues. We'll see lots of clouds, a chance of showers and high temperatures topping out in the low 40s. Dare I say hat and gloves weather?

I've read several reports that say ospreys have returned to Cape Cod, a sure sign of spring. Here's a look at an osprey with a fish takeout order near Kalmus Beach in Hyannis in April 2022.

Sun should return on Wednesday and Thursday, a nice little treat to look forward to. But we'll still be riding with what the National Weather Service calls "seasonable temperatures," with highs in the mid 40s, back into the 30s at night. It doesn't look like we'll top 50 degrees in the next set of days, though off-Cape locales will be warmer.

There is some chatter in the always-interesting National Weather Service forecast discussion about a possible rainy/stormy situation brewing for the weekend, but we'll let that matter stew for another day or two and see what the forecasters come up with.

What is the water temperature of Cape Cod ponds?

In a bold attempt at citizen science, I took my food thermometer over to Long Pond in Wellfleet to see how chilly the water is these days. And this was no ordinary thermometer! No, it's my Thermapen ONE, one of the best Christmas presents ever. It gives you instant temperature readouts and is wicked handy for grilling.

I would say the water temperature at Long Pond in Wellfleet is way too chilly for swimming!

Sure, it works on chicken, but what about pond water? I trudged down to the edge of the pond, got my sneakers wet and dipped it in. Was Long Pond warm enough for a quick dip? Well, if 58 degrees sounds good to you, get going! I chose to skedaddle home and have a hot chocolate.
