Cape Cod weather: Remnants of Hurricane Nicole predicted to bring wind and rain

There are still plenty of leaves left on Cape Cod trees, but they may soon be destined for your lawn and gutters. Wind and rain from the remnants of Hurricane Nicole are headed into the region on Friday night and into Saturday, with gusts possibly nearing 50 mph.

According to the National Weather Service Boston office forecast discussion, "gale force wind gusts appear to be all but a slam dunk across Cape Cod."

A Wind Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Cape and Islands, running from 10 p.m. Friday through 11 a.m. Sunday. South winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected. The advisory also includes parts of central and southern Rhode Island and portions of southeastern Mass.

While most of the rain associated with the event will likely occur to our west, the Cape and Islands could still see a half inch rain or perhaps a bit more by midday on Saturday.

According to the forecast discussion, "it seems unlikely that widespread flooding will be experienced in our area. With that said, isolated to scattered convective cells may produce heavy downpours capable of producing urban and poor drainage flooding given many drains will be clogged with leaf clutter."

National Weather Service spokesman Bill Simpson said that forecasters had been closely watching Nicole's predicted northward track and were concerned about the possibility of a bumpier encounter with the storm for eastern Massachusetts. "But then everything started turning to the west," he said. Western portions of the state could see up to two inches of rain.

Conditions on the sea around Cape Cod could be dangerous. The National Weather Service has issued a Gale Watch, which will be in effect from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. Seas of seven to 10 feet are possible in Nantucket Sound. In the more exposed waters off the backshore of the Cape, seas could build to eight to 14 feet on Friday night and 10 to 18 feet on Saturday.

After the remnants of Nicole pass through, a strong cold front is expected to bring in drier and colder air for Sunday and the beginning of next week.
