CAPE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Bourne Braves hit walk-off grand slam

North Carolina's Mac Horvath stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run 90 feet away. The Braves (13-10-6) had already erased a 2-0 deficit in the frame, and were looking to steal the win against the Chatham Anglers (6-16-7). Horvath decided winning by one wasn't enough and with the bases loaded knocked one over the fence for a walk-off grand slam. The home run was Horvath's first of the season and gave the Braves a dramatic win. Both Notre Dame's Roman Kimball for Chatham and Wake Forest's Seth Keener for Bourne went four scoreless in their respective starts as both offenses were quiet through the first seven innings. Chatham scored single runs in the fifth and the eighth to build their lead, but the Bourne bats came back in the ninth to win.

Orleans Firebirds 6, Cotuit Kettleers 0: A cavalry of arms from the Firebirds (12-14-3) combined to throw a three-hit shutout against the Kettleers (15-9-5). Harvard's Chris Clark got the start and worked around three walks to keep Cotuit off the board. Four arms then came out of the Orleans bullpen, each building on the last to preserve the shutout. The run support came late in the ballgame. The Firebirds broke the deadlock in the top of the eighth inning when UNC Charlotte's Nate Furman singled home Arizona's Nik McClaughry. Orleans then put up a five spot in the ninth inning to put some distance between them and the Kettleers,

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 3, Brewster Whitecaps 0: A three-run third inning was all the Red Sox (15-8-6) needed to beat the Whitecaps (12-11-6) in seven games. The two, three and four hitters each recorded RBI on three consecutive at-bats in the third inning. San Diego State's Cole Carrigg got the scoring starting with a sacrifice fly. University of San Diego's Chase Meidroth then singled home a run, and lastly sophomore Braden Montgomery, out of Stanford, singled in a run as well. Those three runs were all the Y-D pitching staff needed, working around a mid-game weather delay and recording another shutout.

Falmouth Commodores 3, Hyannis Harbor Hawks 2: The Commodores (11-16-2) picked up a key victory tonight, outlasting the Harbor Hawks (14-9-6). After Hyannis took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, Falmouth bounced right back in the sixth, plating two and taking the lead. The Commodores added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Oregon's Josiah Cromwick singled home Alabama's Andrew Pinckney. That run would prove to be crucial as Hyannis scored in the bottom of eighth to make the score 3-2. Texas State's Levi Wells came on and nailed down a five out save for the Commodores, limiting the eighth-inning damage to just a single run.

Harwich Mariners 7, Wareham Gatemen 1: Seton Hall's Zane Probst shut down the Wareham (11-14-4) order over seven innings of shutout baseball. The righty struck out six batters and only allowed five baserunners. Offensively Jonathan Santucci provided a spark for the Mariners (11-13-5) from the bottom third of the order. The sophomore from Duke had a double, a home run and three RBI on the night. Kansas State's Nick Goodwin had three hits and scored twice, and Wake Forest junior Brock Wilkin had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI to propel Harwich to the win.
