CAPE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Brewster takes top spot in the East with 10 offensive outburst

With the regular season ending on Wednesday, the Brewster Whitecaps (19-7-7) picked up an 11-8 victory over the Orleans Firebirds (17-22-4) that moved them into first place in the East Division, for now.

The Whitecaps came out swinging and scored in each of the first four innings. Virginia Tech University's Carson Demartini led the charge over the first four with three runs scored and two RBIs. Brewster led 10-1 after the first four innings.

In the top of the sixth inning, Orleans (17-22-4) scored seven runs that cut Brewster's lead down to 10-8. However, the Firebirds went scoreless the rest of the game and could not catch up. Although Brewster has the top spot in the East right now, the Y-D Red Sox can still get regain their position at the top as they trial by half a point.

Falmouth Commodores 5, Wareham Gatemen 1

Over the first six innings, Falmouth's pitching was lights out. The combination of  University of Florida's Philip Abner and Walters State Community College's Brayden Matthews allowed no runs, three hits, a walk and struck out three over six innings together.

On the offensive side, the Commodores scored three runs in the second inning and two in the fourth. Wareham scored their only two runs over the last three innings. Falmouth clinched a playoff berth Monday, while Wareham will not play in the postseason this year.

Harwich Mariners 6, Hyannis Harbor Hawks 1

Harwich (17-20-6) got a win over the team with the league's best record and got one step closer to the playoffs. Both teams scored in the first inning. For Hyannis (22-15-6), they did not score for the rest of the game due to the pitching of the Mariners. Tufts University's Cameron Mayer picked up the win and pitched three innings as he allowed no runs, four hits, two walks and struck out one.

At bat, Wake Forest University's Brock Wilken and Boston College's Joe Vetrano each went yard for Harwich.

Stars of the Night

1. DH: Joe Vetrano, Boston College, Harwich Mariners

Vetrano helped the Mariners get a win over the top spot Hyannis Harbor Hawks. He finished with a home run, went 2-for-4, scored a run and added three RBIs for the Mariners.

2. SS: Carson Demartini, Virginia Tech University, Brewster Whitecaps 

Demartini helped the Whitecaps move up to the top spot in the East Division as he finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk.

3. RF: Dylan Goldstein, Florida Atlantic University, Brewster Whitecaps

Goldstein finished 3-for-4, scored a run and had an RBI for the first-place Whitecaps.
