CAPE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Chatham Anglers stretch streak to five wins

The  Chatham Anglers (11-17-7) extended their longest winning streak of the season to five  with a 6-3 win over the Orleans Firebirds (13-18-4) .

Despite the Firebirds scoring in the top of the first inning, the Anglers quickly retook the leadwith two runs in the bottom of the third inning. They followed up with three in the fourth, and one in the fifth to build a 6-1 advantage after five innings.

From there, the Chatham pitching staff kept Orleans quiet, allowing just a single run in the sixth inning. West Virginia's Ben Hampton came in to close out the win in the ninth, and did so effectively.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 5, Cotuit Kettleers 1 

The Red Sox (18-10-7) bounced back from Wednesday's loss to Hyannis, beating the Kettleers (18-12-5) in a shortened game.

University of San Diego's Irvan Romero took the ball to start for the Red Sox and set the tone. The junior went four innings and struck out  seven without allowing a run. Y-D struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning when University of Nebraska, Omaha's Michael Boeve executed a suicide squeeze to bring home.

Stanford's Braden Montgomery of Cotuit brought home its sole run of the day in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 1-1.  However, the Red Sox responded immediately with a run in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead.

Insurance runs came across in the bottom of the sixth as the Red Sox scored three, highlighted by Long Beach State's Johnny Long's second home run of the season.

Harwich Mariners 7, Brewster Whitecaps 3

The Mariners (12-17-6) kept ahold of their playoff spot with a win over the Whitecaps (14-15-6). Harwich left it late, down 3-2 going into the top of the seventh inning.

In the frame, the tying and go-ahead runs came across after an error from the Whitecaps. The Mariners followed that up with a three spot in the top of the eighth inning to put some distance between them and the Whitecaps.

Florida's Mac Guscette brought home all three runs with one swing of the bat, hitting a bases clearing double to extend the Mariners lead. Elon's Joe Savino came on in relief with his team down a run, and went 5 1/3  innings scoreless to, not only give his team the chance to win, but also picked up the win himself.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 5, Falmouth Commodores 4

The Commodores (15-17-13) jumped out  to an early lead over the Harbor Hawks (19-10-6). Three separate RBI singles gave Falmouth a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.

Bryant's Chase Jeter started on the mound for Falmouth and went five innings, only allowing a single unearned run. The Harbor Hawks jumped on the Falmouth bullpen to complete their comeback.

San Diego State's Ildefonso Ruiz scored the first of four runs in the seventh inning for the Harbor Hawks. They turned a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 lead and never looked back, capitalizing on Cotuit's loss to extend their lead atop the West.

Bourne Braves 6: Wareham Gatemen 3

The Braves (16-13-6) scored four late runs to pull away from the Gatemen (11-18-6) at home. Bourne took an early one run lead after Pennsylvania's Wyatt Henseler knocked in Rutgers' Christopher Brito with an RBI single in the second inning.

After being held scoreless for four innings, the Wareham offense punished an error from the Braves to score three unearned runs to take the lead 3-2. A bases-loaded walk and a hit-by-pitch in consecutive at-bats allowed the Braves to take the lead, and then the Braves brought home two insurance runs in the home half of the seventh.

Stars of the Night

1. Joe Savino, RHP, Elon University, Harwich Mariners 

Savino came in with his team down 3-2 and across 5 1/3 scoreless innings, kept his team in it and allowed the comeback to materialize. The junior struck out six and only allowed three hits.

2. Ben Hampton, LHP, West Virginia, Chatham Anglers

Hampton's success this season may have been overshadowed by the Anglers slow start, but in his eighth appearance tonight he earned his first save. Hampton has been a force for the Anglers staff this season, maintaining an ERA under two and a 38:4 strikeout to walk ratio.

3. Christopher Brito, INF, Rutgers, Bourne Braves

Brito reached base four times against the Gatemen, spraying three hits and drawing a walk. He scored two runs and drove in another to help the Braves win.
