CAPE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Cotuit moves within a point of first place

The Cotuit Kettleers (20-12-5) routed the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (19-11-7), 12-4 in seven innings, and capitalized on a loss from Hyannis to move within a point of first place on Monday.

The Kettleers used a balanced offensive attack as five Cotuit bats recorded multi-hit games and five different players scored twice. Six Kettleers tallied at least one RBI.

The Kettleers were led Monday night by College of Charleston senior Trotter Harlan. Harlan finished the night 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Cotuit scored in every inning except the first and third en route to the win.

The Red Sox made five errors throughout the game which resulted in five unearned runs.

Falmouth Commodores 12, Hyannis Harbor Hawks 5

The other side of the coin that allowed Cotuit to close in on first place, the Harbor Hawks (20-11-6) had their four-game winning streak snapped by the Commodores (17-17-3). The Commodores used a late flurry of runs to blow past the Harbor Hawks, scoring 11 runs from the sixth inning on.

Florida's Colby Halter led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run to light the comeback fuse. The Commodores entered the inning down 4-1 and exited the inning up 5-4.

Although the Harbor Hawks tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Falmouth continued to pour it on in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to secure the win.

Harwich Mariners 10, Brewster Whitecaps 4

A third straight win for the Mariners (14-7-6) moved them into a tie for second place in the East. After Brewster (14-17-6) took an early lead, Harwich scored seven in the second inning. The knockout punch came when Boston College's Joe Vetrano stepped up with the bases loaded and brought everyone, including himself, home with a grand slam. The Mariners finished the second up 8-2 and never looked back.

Orleans Firebirds 5, Chatham Anglers 2

Orleans didn't break the goose egg on the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth. The Firebirds then dropped a four spot in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead for good. UMass Boston senior Drew Metzdorf led the way with two RBIs and a run scored.

Bourne Braves 4, Wareham Gatemen 3

Played at Polar Park in Worcester, the Braves (17-14-6) scored a late winning run, to escape with a win over the Gatemen (11-20-6). The Braves took an early lead in the first when Rutgers' Evan Sleight drove in UNC's Mac Horvath for the game's first run.

The Braves added to their lead with a run in the third, and another in the fourth, going up 3-0. The Gatemen rallied back, and after scoring one in the bottom of the fourth, tied the game when Arizona State's William Rogers doubled home a pair.

Despite losing the lead, the Braves bounced back, and brought home the winning run in the eighth.

Stars of the Night

1. Trotter Harlan, INF/OF, College of Charleston, Cotuit Kettleers

The best performer on a free-flowing offensive night for his team, Harlan accounted for nearly half of the Kettleers runs against the Red Sox.

2. Colby Halter, INF, Florida, Falmouth Commodores

Halter has probably been Falmouth's best player this season and nights like Monday show why. He finished 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored.

3. Jace Bohrofen, INF/OF, Arkansas, Falmouth Commodores

Two teammates are on this list tonight because they both did damage. Bohrofen reached base three times, scored three runs, also had a home run, and drove in three.
