CAPE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Hyannis Harbor Hawks win fourth straight with league-best record

The Hyannis Harbor Hawks (20-10-6) won their fourth game in a row and held on to their spot as the top team in the Cape Cod Baseball League with a 3-2 win over the Brewster Whitecaps (14-16-6) on Saturday.

The scoreboard remained empty for both teams over the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Harbor Hawks scored all three of their runs. With the combination of Northeastern's Michael Sirota's single and an error by the Whitecaps, this allowed the Harbor Hawks to bring three across the home plate.

The Whitecaps got their first run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Abilene Christian's Grayson Tatrow hit a double that scored Harvard's Logan Bravo to give Hyannis a 3-1 lead. Brewster made one last effort in the ninth inning as Tatrow hit a single and scored Bravo to cut the deficit to one (3-2), but it was not enough.

This win keeps Hyannis at the top of the West Division with the Cotuit Kettleers close behind in second. As for Brewster, they are second in the East Division behind the Yarmouth-Dennis D Red Sox.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 11, Wareham Gatemen 1

After a scoreless first inning, the Red Sox (19-10-7) put up seven runs in the bottom of the second. The second inning was highlighted by Stanford's Braden Montgomery, who hit a grand slam. In the very next inning, Columbia's Hayden Scott scored the only run of the third with a solo home run, that gave the Red Sox an 8-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Schott hit a double that scored Montgomery and pushed the lead to 9-0. The Gatemen (11-19-6) finally got on the board in the top of the sixth as Florida's Deric Fabian went yard. For good measure, The Red Sox scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Red sox have now won two straight headed into the all-star weekend and remain at the top of the East Division. The Gatemen have now dropped four in a row are at the bottom of the West Division.

Cotuit Kettleers 7, Chatham Anglers 3

After both teams were shutout in the first inning, the Kettleers ( 19-12-5) got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the second. In the fourth inning, Charleston's Trotter Harlan hit a double that brought in Stanford's Eddie Park for the fourth run of the game.

In the fifth inning, the Kettlers put up three more runs, highlighted by Miami's CJ Kayfus two-run home run. This put Cotuit up 7-0 after five innings. Over the next two innings, the Anglers (11-18-7) attempted to make a comeback as they scored three runs, but it was too little too late.

Cotuit is trying to take back their number one spot in the West Division as they sit in second behind the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

Falmouth Commodores 10, Bourne Braves 3

The Braves (16-14-6) struck first early in the bottom of the first inning. Evan Sleight hit a double that scored North Carolina Chapel Hill's Mac Haorvath, and Christopher Brito hit a sacrifice fly that scored Maryland College Park's Matt Shaw. This put the Braves on top 2-0 after the first.

The next three innings went scoreless before the Commodores (16-17-3) switched gears. They scored at least one run over the next five innings. The scoring started in the fifth inning as they scored four runs and took a 4-2 lead. A big part of the fourth inning scoring was Duke's Alex Mooney, who hit a three-run home run.

In the eight inning, Oregon's Jacob Walsh hit a solo home run that gave them a 7-2 lead. Sleight hit a single that scored Shaw for the Braves first run since the first inning.

Falmouth scored three more runs in the ninth for good measure that gave them a 10-3 lead and a win. Despite the loss, the Braves are still third in the West Division with the Commodores right behind them in fourth place.

Harwich Mariners 9, Orleans Firebirds 4

The Mariners (13-17-4) wasted no time as they scored three runs over the first two innings. In the fourth inning, Harwich continued their scoring as North Carolina State's Kalae Harrison singled to left field that brought in two runs. Harwich led 5-0 over the first four innings.

Orleans (13-19-4) started off the third inning with three runs, led by a double from North Carolina Charlotte's Austin Knight and a single from Cal State Long Beach's Connor Burns. This gave cut Harwich's lead down to 5-3. The Mariners responded right away as they scored Alabama Tuscaloosa's Tommy Seidl scored on a wild pitch.

In the sixth inning, the Firebirds picked up another run, but the Mariners answered with three runs of their own.  Both teams went scoreless the rest of the way. With this win, Harwich jumped into third place over Orleans in the East Division.

Stars of the night

1. Braden Montogomery, OF/P, Stanford, Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox

Montgomery hit a grand slam to highlight a seven-run second inning. He finished 2-for-4 with two hits and five RBIs.

2. Jake Berry, P, Virginia, Hyannis Harbor Hawks

Berry was in the zone as he pitched five innings and allowed no runs, a single hit, a walk and struck out six, as he picked up the win.

3. Alex Mooney, IF, Duke, Falmouth Commodores

Mooney's night was highlighted by a three-run home run in the fourth inning and gave the Commodores their first lead of the game (4-2). He finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBIs and a walk.
