CAPE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Wareham Gatemen snap five-game skid

The Wareham Gatemen (12-20-6) survived two late runs from the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (19-12-7) to snap a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 win on Tuesday.

Samford's Jacob Cravey got the start for Wareham and shut out the Red Sox over four innings of work. The Gatemen jumped out to a quick first-inning lead when Arizona State's William Rogers drove in the game's first run with an RBI single. Wareham extended its lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 3-0.

The Red Sox refused to go quietly, and Stanford sophomore Braden Montgomery got YD on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. An unearned run restored a two-run lead for the Gatemen.

Brewster Whitecaps 3, Hyannis Harbor Hawks 1

A three-run fourth inning provided enough offense for the Whitecaps (15-17-6) to overcome the Harbor Hawks (20-12-6) Tuesday night.

The Whitecaps struck first when Maryland's Nick Lorusso reached on an error and came around to score. Abeline Christian product, and All-Star Game MVP, Grayson Tatrow and Oklahoma State's David Mendham also came around to score in the inning to build the 3-0 advantage.

On the mound, USC's Grant Kipp struck out five over four scoreless innings in his first start of the season.

Hyannis scored their lone run in the eighth inning when Northeastern's Michael Sirota drove in Michigan State's Mitch Jebb.

Harwich Mariners 11, Falmouth Commodores 7

The Mariners (15-17-6) used a six-run sixth inning to overcome a 7-3 deficit, and beat the Commodores (17-18-3). Every single hitter scored a run for Harwich in the win.

The six-run inning began with Virginia's Ethan O'Donnell singling home Alabama's William Hamiter. Overall, Harwich sent 11 men to the plate in the inning and turned a four-run hole into a two-run lead.

The Mariners bullpen held Falmouth scoreless over the final 4 2/3 innings of the game, preserving the lead and the win for them.

Bourne Braves 4, Orleans Firebirds 3

Louisville's Kade Grundy only allowed one unearned run, to propel the Braves (18-14-6) past the Firebirds (14-20-4).

The Braves scored in the top of the first inning courtesy of Polk State College's Nelson Taylor's leadoff home run. Although Orleans tied the game in the bottom of the second, the Braves regained the lead in the top of the fourth. Insurance runs came across for Bourne in the seventh and eighth, which allowed the Braves to withstand two late runs from the Firebirds in the bottom of the eighth.

Chatham Anglers 10, Cotuit Kettleers 2

The Anglers (12-19-7) had an efficient night, scoring 10 runs on six hits to beat the Kettleers (20-13-5). University of Tampa's Anthony Nuñez hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to give the Anglers a comfortable lead in the sixth inning, ballooning their 3-2 lead to a 7-2 gap. Nova Southeastern University's Carlos Rey pitched four scoreless innings in relief, to secure the win.

Stars of the Night

1. Grant Kipp, RHP, USC, Brewster Whitecaps

Kipp, making his first start of the season, kept the league's best offense quiet over four frames.

2. Kade Grundy RHP/OF, Louisville, Bourne Braves

The only blemish on Grundy's start was a solo unearned run. The sophomore went five innings and only allowed five hits.

3. Marcus Brown, INF, Oklahoma State, Chatham Anglers

Two hits, two RBIs, and a run scored, highlighted an all-around impactful night for Brown.
