CAPE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Yarmouth-Dennis continues hot streak with comeback over Bourne

Following a slow start to the season, the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox are now surging.

On Tuesday, the Red Sox pulled out of a 4-0 hole by scoring seven unanswered runs in a 7-4 win over the Bourne Braves. The win puts the Red Sox (4-3-2) above .500 for the first time this season after starting 0-3-1.

The Y-D offense roared back in the home half of the fourth inning. Long Beach State's Jonathan Long drove in the Red Sox first run of the game, plating Xavier's Luke Franzoni with an RBI single. The offense kept it rolling behind Long, as Western Carolina's Pascanel Ferreras knocked in two, and two batters later, Grand Canyon University's Homer Bush Jr. joined the party with his own two-RBI single.

The Y-D bullpen took over after that. Zach Veen, out of Point Loma Nazarene University, threw a scoreless inning of relief and then Rhode Island College's Shaun Gamelin shut the door over the final three frames, striking out six of the nine batters he faced.

In other Cape League action on Wednesday:

Orleans Firebirds 6, Harwich Mariners 3

Travis Honeyman, from Boston College, led off the home half of the first inning with a leadoff home run to get the Firebirds (4-4-1) off and running. The Mariners responded immediately in the top of the second. Old Dominion's Kenny Levari drove in Alabama's Tommy Seidl to level the game at 1-1.

Two for the Firebirds in the bottom of the second and two for the Mariners in the top of the fifth made the score 3-3 going into the sixth. The Firebirds scored one in each of the sixth-eighth innings to take the lead for good and win.

Brewster Whitecaps 5, Hyannis Harbor Hawks 4

The Whitecaps improved to 5-4 after beating the Harbor Hawks (3-5-1) in walk-off fashion. The game was dominated by pitching early on. Rutgers' Brian Fitzpatrick threw five scoreless innings for the Whitecaps, striking out four and only allowing two hits.

On the other side, two arms combined for five scoreless innings for the Harbor Hawks. Stetson's Austin Amaral went 3.0 innings and then Long Beach State's Zachary Voelker went two scoreless in relief to keep the game 0-0 through five.

The Whitecaps drew first blood via a bases-loaded hit by pitch, allowing Oregon's Brennan Milone to score. After another run in the bottom of the seventh, Hyannis tied the game at two in the top of the eighth before surrendering it again in the home half of the inning. The Harbor Hawks rallied again to score twice in the ninth. Michigan junior Tito Flores hit a two-out, two-run home run to take the lead 4-3.

The Whitecaps were down but not out, as the first two men reached in the inning, and after Milone was intentionally walked to load the bases, Abilene Christian's Grayson Tatrow sent the home fans home happy, smacking a two-RBI double to steal the win.

Cotuit Kettleers 5, Wareham Gatemen 3

Cotuit (8-0) continued its hot start to the season, beating the Gatemen (3-5-1) on the road. The two teams did most of their scoring in the third inning. The Kettleers used five hits, put up a four spot in the top of the third, and the Gatemen came back with three runs of their own despite only tallying one hit in the inning.

The Kettleers' staff then knuckled down and continued to do what they've done better than any other group in the league - keep teams from scoring. The trio of UNC Wilmington's Ethan Chenault, Harvard's Will Jacobsen, and Ohio State's TJ Brock, combined to throw 6 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for Cotuit, striking out nine along the way, and only allowing two hits.

Falmouth Commodores 4, Chatham 1

Wake Forest sophomore Josh Hartle set the tone for the Commodores (3-6) in his first start of the summer. The 6-4 lefty went five scoreless innings, with only three hits allowed. The Commodore offense gave him all the run support he needed in the third and fourth innings.

They first got on the board in the third when Sam Houston State's Anthony Makenzie walked and came around to score on a fielders choice. A solo home run from Oregon's Jacob Walsh, and a two-run shot from South Florida's Drew Butcher, gave the Commodores some breathing room over the Anglers (3-4-1). Despite giving up a run in the eighth inning, Chase Jeter, from Sacred Heart, completed the six-out save to secure the victory.
