It snowed over 8 inches in parts of New England Tuesday. Town-by-town totals for Cape Cod.

Snow totals for Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut began rolling into the National Weather Service just hours after the frozen white stuff began falling from New England skies late Monday and early Tuesday.

Snowfall on the Cape and Islands was relatively tame, turning to rain after throwing a wrench in morning commutes and school openings. Barnstable County topped out at 4 inches in the latest report, which came out at 11:59 a.m., and the lowest report in the county was just half an inch.

Dukes County reported higher at 4.5 inches. Nantucket did not have an inch count for the 11:59 a.m. report.

By comparison, over 6 inches of snow was reported across much of Hampden and Hampshire counties in Massachusetts, and a couple places in Worcester County. One spotter in Plainfield - in Hampshire County - measured 8 inches of snow, while another in Worcester County's Charlton measured 8.1.

  • Mashpee: 3.5 inches, recorded at 9 a.m.

  • Waquoit: 2.8 inches, recorded at 7 a.m.

  • Sandwich: 0.5 inches, recorded at 8:10 a.m.

Winter storm updates

Dennis Town Hall delayed opening until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, in the latest snow-related delay caused by Tuesday's early-morning storm.

Trash and recycling won't be picked up today in Bourne, and the schedule will resume Wednesday. Bourne town offices are expected to be open for regular hours.

Gale warnings were in effect early Tuesday for coastal waters from Provincetown to Chatham to Nantucket, also in Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound. High winds were expected to last through Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Strong winds can cause hazardous seas that could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.

Eversource is not reporting any power outages in Eastern Massachusetts.

Schools across Cape issue two-hour delays

Several Cape Cod public school systems issued two-hour delays over snow that was expected to begin falling in the early Tuesday morning hours and continue to mid-morning.

As of 5:45 a.m., Barnstable, Bourne, Falmouth, Monomoy Regional School District - which covers Harwich and Chatham - Sandwich and Upper Cape Cod Regional Vocational Technical School announced the delay. Cape Cod Community College canceled morning classes, and the school plans to open at 12:30 p.m.

Schools and other programs in Massachusetts issued delays or called snow days for the storm, which hit harder in different parts of the state.

The delay also means the cancelation of morning preschool and YMCA programs before school, according to websites for Falmouth Public Schools, Monomoy Regional Public Schools and Bourne Public Schools.

"With the continued snowfall early this morning, additional time is required to have all roads cleared prior to the school buses running by the DPW," a notice on the Falmouth Public Schools website reads. "The district's priority is to ensure the safety of our students and staff at all times."

Schools on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are on school vacation.
