Cape weekend weather: Rainy days are good for planting. How wet will it be?

If weather forecasters used proverbs, they might look at the weekend ahead and say "all good things must come to an end."

This may come as a surprise to Cape Codders who cheerfully assumed that the recent string of sunny, warm days would stretch all the way into summer and beyond. After all, most would agree that we deserve only the best of weather patterns.

But a sudden change is on the horizon for Saturday. After a warm Friday that could possibly bring near-record high temperatures to parts of mainland Massachusetts, a cold front is set to sweep in.

While some parts of the state might be in the 80s and 90s on Friday, by Saturday morning folks will become reacquainted with temperatures in the low 50s, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain and chilly northeast winds will also be part of the package, with gusts possibly nudging 30 mph or so on Saturday and Sunday.

"It's looking like it's going to be a wetter weekend," said Andrew Loconto, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service Boston/Norton office, who added that Cape Cod will likely see two-thirds of an inch to an inch of rain over the weekend.

"It won't be a soaker, but more of a steady light rain," said Loconto. "We do need the rain pretty badly."

Rain-starved Cape Cod gardeners may see a silver lining in the less than perfect forecast

"Nothing would make me happier than if it rained all weekend," said Cape gardening expert. C.L. Fornari. Rainy days are a good time to plant, she added.

But despite the possibility of a goodly serving of rain, Fornari said gardeners who are in planting mode this weekend should also "water the plants in" with a hose to make sure the ground is settled around them and that there are no air pockets.
