Capital City Film Fest: Everything you need to know

The basics

  • In most cases, tickets are at the door for $5; a few special events are $10. The website also has all-access passes for $50 and patron passes for $100.

  • The three main sites are: the former Sears building, Frandor; the former Michigan National Guard building, 2500 S. Washington; and The Fledge, 1300 Eureka.

The start and finish

  • Opening film: “Hundreds of Beavers,” 6:30 p.m. April 5, Sears.

  • Closing film: “Hayseed,” 7 p.m., April 15, 2500 S. Washington.

What’s free?

  • Premiere party, 6-10 p.m. April 6, Sears; includes a DJ and (until 7:30) light appetizers.

  • Family-fun shorts, shown continuously at Impression 5, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 8.

  • “Only I Can Hear,” noon, April 8, Sears. It’s a story of three teen CODA’s (children of deaf adults).

  • “Symphonic Cinema,” 5 p.m., April 8, 2500 S. Washington. Live music accompanying film.

  • “We Are Still Here,” 6 p.m., April 11, Sears. It weaves stories from 10 indigenous filmmakers.

  • An “Afterglow,” 10 p.m., April 14, Sears, with The Corzo Effect. Details are pending.

  • AFI shorts, noon, April 15, 2500 S. Washington. This has been an annual highlight; in an American Film Institute program, women who work in other movie fields make their directing debuts.

Other performances

“Smomid,” 8 p.m., April 12, Robin Theatre, 1105 S. Washington. Computer concert by Nick Demopoulos, using instruments he built. Free, but reservations (at the festival website) are needed and donations to the theater are encouraged.

Quality Scary is a comedy group that overlays its comments on a film. This year has “Thirteen Ghosts,” a 2001 film with Tony Shalhoub, Matthew Lillard (a Quality Scary favorite) and Shannon Elizabeth. It will also include music performances; 8 p.m., April 14, Sears, $10.

“Dissonance,” the CCFF “afterparty,” starts at 9 p.m. April 15, Sears, $10.
