Capital Health hit by cyber attack. What patients need to know

The Capital Health network — which operates the Regional Medical Center in Trenton, the Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, the Hamilton outpatient facility, and various other primary and specialty care practices in Bucks County and NJ — is investigating a cyber attack that has caused network outages and impacted some of its patient services.

Officials with Capital Health believe the cyber attack is similar to attacks on the networks of other healthcare providers.

Capital Health officials estimate the effects of the cyber attack on its network to last for several days.

Some services impacted by Capital Health cyber attack

According to a statement from Capital Health, officials with the health care provider became aware of a cybersecurity incident earlier this week, which impacted a number of systems and services.

Capital Health’s Information Technology team immediately began to assess the situation, safeguard data, and work to regain system functionality.

"All Capital Health ERs remain open ... Both hospitals continue to admit and treat patients who need inpatient care and services," read a portion of the statement. "With our continued focus on delivering safe patient care, we made some changes to elective surgical and procedure schedules, but there is now minimal impact on surgical schedules.

Outpatient radiology is currently not available, and neurophysiology and non-invasive cardiology testing will be rescheduled."

The health system is notifying patients if their appointment needs to be rescheduled.

In its note, Capital Health officials said all Capital Health Medical Group practices are open for all patient visits, as are all other locations such as LIFE and CARES.

Additionally, surgeries will be prioritized based on urgency and critical nature of the patient’s condition.
