Capital Township seeking applicants for vacant board seat

Capital Township announced Tuesday that it would be accepting applications to fill the seat on the Board of Trustees left empty by the departure of Brad Carlson to the Springfield City Council last month.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on June 21. Those seeking to apply must send a resume and cover letter to Joe Aiello, Capital Township Supervisor/Collector, in his office at the Sangamon County Complex or by emailing him at Joe.Aiello@sangamonil.gov. Anyone wishing to apply for the seat must live in Capital Township and be registered to vote there. They also must be a Republican, the same party Carlson belongs to.

Carlson left the Capital Township Board after he was elected in April as the new alderman in Ward 7 on the City Council. Carlson had been a trustee for the past seven years, having been appointed before winning his first full term in 2017. He also serves as a legislative staffer for the Illinois Senate Republicans.

Carlson's term runs through 2025.

By law, Carlson can only serve in one of the offices.

Ward 5 Ald. Lakeisha Purchase also had to resign as a trustee after being appointed to the city council in 2021.

Aiello, who also serves as the Sangamon County Treasurer, said that Carlson's expertise on a variety of issues would be missed as he moves on to the City Council.

"Brad was a service minded trustee with a passion for our clients," Aiello said. "His knowledge and expertise will be missed."

Two primary functions of Capital Township government are general assistance and property valuation services. Trustees are responsible for legislation, procedural policy and the finances of the township.

Other trustees are Bernadette Gordon, Ken Leonard and Tammie Rockford. Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray serves as township Clerk/Assessor.
