Capitol Police arrest man with two Molotov cocktails
U.S. Capitol Police officers arrested a man who had two Molotov cocktails on Wednesday not far from the U.S. Capitol.
After responding to a report about a man who had Molotov cocktails, identified later on Wednesday as 26-year-old Bernard L. McCutcheon, Capitol police said he threw one at the officers as he tried to light it.
The agency said McCutcheon tried to get away, but after officers stopped him, they said he dropped the other Molotov cocktail, allegedly containing a petroleum-based accelerant.
Capitol police said in a tweet that they arrested the man at around 3:30 p.m. along Massachusetts Avenue, west of North Capitol Street.
McCutcheon has been charged with two counts of assault on a police officer, one count of possession of a Molotov cocktail and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.
“Both of our officers were treated for minor injuries,” acting Assistant Chief of Police for Uniformed Operations Sean Gallagher said in a release. “Thankfully they are going to be ok. We appreciate their quick action that, without a doubt, kept the community safer.”
The tweet said police have no indication that the man’s activity was related to the Capitol itself, members of Congress or any protest.
