Captain America: Civil War D23 Trailer Promises Plenty of Conflict

That’s right true believers, the first footage from the next eagerly anticipated Marvel movie ‘Captain America: Civil War’ has been seen… though not by us, sadly. Nor has it been released online just yet.

The sneak peek was granted to the audience at Disney’s D23 expo this weekend, and comes only a month after Marvel’s movie wing surprised many by skipping San Diego Comic Con, leading many to suspect that they’ll be saving their big reveals for events organised by parent company Disney from now on.

Numerous sources report that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was joined on the D23 stage by Cap actor Chris Evans and Falcon actor Anthony Mackie to present the specially edited reel - and here, in a brief, is what was shown, according to descriptions posted at The Wrap, The Hollywood Reporter. and IGN.

Reportedly the footage opens with Cap, Falcon and Scarlet Johannson’s Black Widow in an urban environment, confronting Frank Grillo’s villain Crossbones. Connecting proceedings here directly to those of the previous Cap solo movie ‘The Winter Soldier,’ Crossbones tells Cap, “You know, he remembered you. Your pal, your buddy, your Bucky,“ seemingly confirming the earlier film’s hints that the resurrected Winter Soldier remembers who he was before.

Then there is said to have been a speech from William Hurt’s General Ross, a surprise return from a character and actor last seen in 2008′s largely disregarded ‘The Incredible Hulk.’ He tells Cap, "The world owes you an unpayable debt. While a great many people see you as a heroes, there are some who prefer the word ‘vigilante.’ People are afraid.”

Evans’ Cap also muses on the downsides of superheroism: “In this job, we try to save as many as we can. Sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody.” This would seem to hint at a high-profile failure which turns public opinion against the Avengers.

This, it seems, sets the stage for the government superhero registration bill which will tear the Avengers apart, leading to what promises to be an absolute scene-stealer of a line from Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man to Cap: “Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth.”

Nor is these the only Avengers to turn on one another, as Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye trades blows with his long-time sister-in-arms Black Widow, during which altercation she asks “we’re still friends, right?” To which he replies, “Depends on how hard you hit me.”

On top of this, the footage is also said to boast the first, albeit very brief look at Chadwick Boseman in full costume as Black Panther - and ends on a light-hearted note with Paul Rudd as a starstruck Ant-Man telling Cap, “you know a lot of super-people, so thanks for thinking of me,” having been brought into the fold - as hinted at by the finale of ‘Ant-Man.’

Notably absent was any glimpse or reference to Spider-Man, though it is known that Tom Holland will make his debut in the role in this film prior to his 2017 solo film.

Believe us, we know it’s less rewarding to read descriptions of this stuff than it is to actually see it, and we’re right there with you. Rest assured if/when Marvel officially release the footage online we’ll be sharing it with you ASAP.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ hits UK cinemas on 29 April 2016.
