Captains get back in win column with 7-3 victory over West Michigan

Aug. 18—The Lake County Captains looked to snap their two-game skid when they continued their series on the road with West Michigan on Aug. 18.

The two teams traded blows in the third followed by another four scoreless innings. But a strong final two innings at the plate pushed the Captains (61-49) to a 7-3 win, and took a two-games lead on West Michigan in the High-A Midwest League standings.

The Captains got the scoring started with a double by Petey Halpin in the top of the third. Both Connor Kokx and Angel Martinez scored and a throwing error allowed for Halpin to take third.

A wild pitch in the next at-bat allowed for Halpin to score and made it a three-run lead in favor of Lake County.

The Whitecaps struck back quick with an RBI single by Trei Cruz. A two-run single by Austin Murr tied the game at 3.

Other than the three-run outburst, Jack Leftwich had another solid outing for the Captains. The lefty went five innings, gave up two hits and struck out four.

Lake County retook the lead in the eighth as Halpin scored on a ground out. In the top of the ninth, a wild pitch allowed Micael Ramirez to score from third and then two batters later, Alexfri Planez doubled to left to score Martinez and Milan Tolentino.

The Captains turn to Tommy Mace (0-4, 4.63 ERA) when the series continues on Aug. 19, while West Michigan starts Carlos Guzman (6-6, 5.14). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
