Captains bats can't keep up with Loons, fall 8-1

May 10—The Lake County Captains held Great Lakes to three hits when the two met on May 10. However, all three were home runs from the Loons.

Dalton Rushing had a pair of long balls to right and Yunior Garcia added one to right that pushed the Loons to an early lead and never looked back as they won, 8-1.

The Captains (15-13) fell behind in the top of the first as a pair of walks allowed Great Lakes (19-10) to put runners in scoring position. Alex Freeland hit a ground ball to third that plated the first run in the game.

The Loons' Rushing then hit his first homer of the game, which doubled up the Great Lakes lead to 2-0. His other came in the fifth. He's totaled three in the first two games of the series.

The other Loons run came in the fourth. Taylor Young drew a walk, stole second and then advanced to third on a throwing error.

A wild pitch on the next delivery allowed Young to advance home and added a run for Great Lakes.

Great Lakes added three runs in the eighth as a pair of throwing errors plated two Loons runners as well as a sacrifice fly by Chris Alleyne.

Lake County struggled from the plate. Four Great Lakes pitchers combined for nine strikeouts, five of which were from starter Yon Castro.

The Captains got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Victor Planchart hit a double to right and Will Bartlett scored for Planchart's fifth run driven in this season.

Lake County had a chance to answer in the bottom of the seventh. After a pair of outs, Planchart reached on a throwing error.

After two walks, Yordys Valdez batted with the bases loaded. On a 2-2 count, he hit a fly ball to left that ended the threat.

Captains starter Reid Johnston went 4 2/3 innings and struck out four.

The teams return to the Classic Auto Group Park on May 11. The Captains send Aaron Davenport (0-1, 4.41 ERA) to the mound to counter Maddux Bruns, who will make his High-A debut for the Loons.
