Captains survive harrowing ninth to win, 2-1

Jun. 3—Starter Ryan Webb pitched seven shutout innings, and Tyler Thornton worked out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the ninth to preserve the Captains' 2-1 victory over Quad Cities on June 3 at Classic Auto Group Park.

Webb (2-2) matched his season-high with eight strikeouts. The 2021 fourth-round pick walked two and lowered his ERA to 3.45.

Thornton pitched a scoreless eighth. In the ninth, he walked the first three batters, then got a strikeout, a run-scoring groundout and a pop-out to end it. He has six saves this season.

The Captains took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when a throwing error by the River Bandits' catcher on a stolen base allowed Nate Furman to score. Yordys Valdez doubled in the other run in the eighth inning. He has 10 doubles and 18 RBI on the season.

The game was played in a tidy 2 hours, 8 minutes in front of 2,574.

Lake County (25-25) has won three of the first five games of the series, which concludes June 4 in Eastlake.
