Captiva restaurant, closed since Hurricane Ian, welcomes back guests

Known as an ideal spot to watch the sun set into the Gulf of Mexico, the Mucky Duck is back.

The Captiva Island restaurant on Andy Rosse Lane held a soft opening on Wednesday after being closed since Hurricane Ian pummeled the islands in late September.

“We decided to do a ‘soft opening’ (Wednesday) just to see what happens — and guess what, a whole bunch of people showed up out of seemingly nowhere!” a post on its Facebook page read.

The restaurant is still without phone service or internet so, for now, all sales are cash only.

“Please bear with us as not everything is not fully functional yet, or going quite as planned, but with time these things will smooth out,” the post continued. “Welcome back everyone, and please keep us in your prayers that we can keep moving forward from here!!!”

The Mucky Duck opened in 1976 in what once was the old Gulf View Inn. The menu, as you may have guessed, has always been seafood heavy, with plenty of beer, wine and wine-based cocktails served. Guests usually flock there around sunset to watch the colorful show.

Lunch hours listed on the website are from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner is from 5 p.m. until closing daily. Times may vary.

If the parking lot is full, head back north on Captiva Drive and you’ll find a public parking lot at the end. A walk back along the beach should get you to the restaurant rather quickly.
