A car accident at the Garden City LIRR station is impacting the evening commute. Dan Rice reports from Chopper 2.
- We have breaking news concerning the evening commute. A car accident at the LIRR station is affecting trains right now. Chopper 2 is over the scene and Dan Rice is in Garden City for us, Dan.
- And Kristin, you're looking down at Franklin Avenue crossing on the LIRR. We should first of all tell you that there was not a train involved in the accident, but there was a motor vehicle crash that happened. Just North of those train tracks, you can see the crossing gate and the overhead signaling crashing down to the ground there. Debris on the side of the wall the roadway as well.
Not clear exactly what the cause of the accident was. We can tell you that the person in the SUV involved, that person had taken to an area hospital and non-life threatening conditions at this point. We'll come down the street, and we can see that vehicle on the back of a flatbed tow truck. You can see substantial damage to the front end of that vehicle.
Now as far as the LIRR is concerned, the Hempstead bridge that has no service in either direction completely shut down at this point. They are recommending you use either the Huntington trip watch either Port Jefferson bridge or the West Hempstead bridge as alternates. And they are trying to get bus service secured for this area. But again, no service on the Hempstead branch. Reporting live in Chopper 2, Dan Rice CBS 2 News.
- All right, Dan. Thank you for that update.
