Car Barely Visible Above Floodwaters in Central Alabama

“Life-threatening” flash flooding hit areas of Alabama on October 6, with emergency crews carrying out dozens of water rescues through the night.

This video, taken by Jason Pierre Brown, shows a car stranded in floodwaters on Highway 119 in Pelham, Alabama.

Speaking to Storyful, Brown said that the driver tried to make it through the floodwaters but got stuck in the middle of the street.

Luckily, the night-shift supervisor at the Taco Bell across the street noticed the incident and swam to the car to rescue the three adults inside. Once she helped them get out, she invited them inside the chain restaurant and gave them free food, according to Brown.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said 5 to 10 inches of rainfall was recorded in parts of Shelby and Jefferson counties.

“Emergency management in Jefferson County and Shelby County, as well as first responders, report ongoing flooding of residences, roadways, and waterways with water rescues in progress,” the NWS warned. “This will remain a dangerous flood situation through the night, especially for those near waterways, as runoff results in continued elevated water levels."
