Officials: 4 injured, including child, when car crashes into Daytona ISB beach approach

A car crashed into a beach toll booth at the International Speedway Boulevard approach in Daytona Beach on Sunday afternoon and ended up in the ocean, injuring at least four people, including a child, authorities said.

Witnesses say the car obliterated the toll booth as it barreled toward the ocean.

News-Journal photographer Nigel Cook described the scene.

"Fortunately, the toll attendant was not in (the toll booth)," said Cook.

The crash occurred at 4:52 p.m. and callers to 9-1-1 said the car was in the ocean, according to dispatchers.

Details of the incident were not immediately available as officers with the Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue were still investigating Sunday evening, said Ocean Rescue Deputy Chief Tamra Malphurs.

Malphurs did confirm that a car crashed into the ocean at the International Speedway Boulevard beach approach at 300 Atlantic Ave.

"We are still gathering information to get all the facts right," Malphurs said late Sunday.

Preliminary information from first responders arriving at the scene indicated several people were injured in the crash.

Debris was spread all over the scene, authorities said.

A child was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach as a trauma alert with a chest wound, authorities said.

Rescue workers said the injured child was then airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando.

Rescue workers also informed dispatchers that the driver of the crashed vehicle was also a trauma alert. The driver was also transported to Halifax Health Medical Center, authorities said.

Several others suffered minor cuts and scratches, authorities said.
